Laid down in Stockholm in 1886, launched on August 7, 1886, was commissioned in 1888 for this project Total 9 ships built. "Korean" was carrying the service in the Far East. Before the start of the Russian-Japanese war of 1904-1905, together with protected cruisers of the 1st rank "Varyag" (commander - Captain 1st rank VF Rudnev) was in a hospital in the Korean port of Inch'on. 9 February (27 January) in 1904, "Varyag" and "Korean" went on break at 11:45, and entered into an unequal battle with the Japanese squadron. The battle lasted for about 1 hour. "Korean" participated only in the final phase of it, covering the retreat of the "Varyag"; he was able to repel a torpedo attack, taken by Japanese destroyers. During the battle the ship released by the enemy projectile 52; loss of or damage "Korean" was not. To prevent capture by the Japanese ship after the fight (at 15:55), "Korean" was blown up on the roads Inch'on. The crew was taken aboard the French cruiser "Pascal", taken to Saigon and soon returned to Russia. In St. Petersburg, all the officers were awarded the Order of St. George 4-th degree, and members of the teams - the marks of distinction of the Order. In honor of the heroism of sailors a special medal "For the battle of the" Varyag "and" Korean "with Chemulpo" was established, which all the participants in the battle were awarded.
